I've heard several ideas over the years for keep fresh apples crisp during the winter. I know that in the old days people would keep the apples in a cool cellar or attic and then they would have them all during the winter. Do apples stay crisp if they are kept in the fridge?
Last season, we went for an apple picking and went home with a bag chock-full of apples. We just placed them in the vegetable bin of the fridge. They stayed fresh and crisp for a couple of months. I heard that you can also wrap each apple in newspaper before storing them in the fridge.
I've used the "wrapping them in newspaper" method many times and, if I have a glut, I store them in a box in a cool room like a pantry or bathroom. I find that they will deteriorate quicker if kept in the fridge.
We store ours in the vegetable drawer of the fridge, and I have had them keep just fine for up to three months. I have never heard the newspaper trick before!
The crisper works well, but it's so small. I'm lucky enough to have a root cellar and it keeps my apples, and root vegetables nice and cool. I'd bet you could just dig out a portion of the cellar to make a little root cellar if you wanted.
The newspaper trick is news to me, no pun intended. I might try that myself because my apples don't last more than a couple of weeks in the refrigerator. They're still edible but they start to get a little mushy, and I like them really crisp.
I have never heard of doing the newspaper thing before either. I usually put them in a bin in the garage. It is suitably cool in the winter but not as cold as the fridge.
