Grapes

Are there different kinds of grapes to use when making wine? I myself have never made wine, but I am beginning to get interested in it after reading these posts.
If there are different kinds, what kind do you like to use best? Any reasons?

Well, you know all the great commercial wine makers rave about the type of grapes they use. The interesting thing is that a grape can taste different each year dependant on the weather, amongst other things. That's why some years are terrific wines and others not so good. The most interesting, for me, is that if you use a mixture of grapes, you come up with a unique taste every single time!

I don't think there is necessarily a 'best' type of grape to use. It's all about taste really. I would experiment with different types, and find the flavor that you enjoy most.

Grapes come in many varieties. Some make great wine, some good wine, some just wine. But in their defence they do all make wine.

Different grapes make different wines. So you might want to research and figure out what type of wine you want to make first, so that you get the right grapes for it.

IN other words, taste is varied and what may taste good to me might a whole difference to another person. If you want to make wine for commercial use, you might want to try out the different grape types.

I have used many different grape to make wines. Each of our taste buds is unique and needs to be taught to consume wine as wine is a spoiled juice in all reality. I love carmenere grapes. They approach my tongue in a loving fashion. Others will say red is dead give me straw colored or clear wine and it's all good. Pickled beets makes me sad after 30 years of "It's an acquired taste I realized it wasn't going to happen for me. There is no red wine with fish and white..... . The wine you enjoy is the right wine. Wine would be a more popular beverage if snobbery hadnt created an atmosphere where people feel they need college credits to pick a dinner wine. #1 Enjoy.

Angeson have you ever used muscadine grapes? From my understanding it is the one of the few types that grow down here in Florida. They are the only grape plants I've been able to find too.

Yes Jason ,I made a Black Noble Muscadine from a state champ recipe that came our fine. There are some vinifera hybrids that can grow in Florida but they are troublesome. Fungus problems and such. Be ware of Tyty nurserys and their affiliates they will send you any diseased thing and tell you a rooted cutting is a 3 year old plant.

A friend of mine brought over some wine over the weekend with the smallest grapes I had ever seen. I was not even aware you could get them from the east coast this time of year, looks more like something that would be coming from the west coast.

Not sure how I missed your post, but thank you. I'm thinking next year to plant about half a dozen or so of them. See how they work out. Thanks for the warning too. So far I've had good luck with my local nursery.

There are many different types of grapes and each one has a distinct flavor. They will all result in a different wine flavor. I would assume that purple and black grapes make sweeter wines than white grapes.

I have planted some grape vines this year. I found some at sam's club. They had bundles with a bunch of different kinds. I also planted a bunch of berry bushes all kinds. SO I hope I will be able to make some great wines and experiments by next year. If the Deer and animals leave them alone. They have been tearing up the garden this year.

I would say the grapes that are fresh from the grape Vineyards are best to use for making authentic wine. I think you can order a fresh shipment on line just look around.
